• Paint is first applied to the surface in any number of ways, then a pointed tool is used to remove lines of paint

These scratched-in lines might reveal a lighter or darker shade that lies below the wet paint that is being removed, and the difference in value can be used to create shading or highlighting that indicates form. These scratched in lines might be hatched, swirled, and/or erratic, and any combination of these forms of scratching can be used to create varied textures and rhythms.
